Perhaps the more fitting title is ‘Build Stronger Boards’, but it didn’t have quite the same ring as the triple B’s. So…thanks for obliging!
A strong, diverse, and effective board of directors is key to ensuring success, growth, governance and accountability in any organizational context, but particularly in the not-for-profit or social benefit sector. Strong organizations tend to raise more resources and have a greater opportunity to serve more people more efficiently. Core to the Prince George’s County Social Innovation Fund’s decision to focus on leadership pipeline development for human service organizations is the fundamental belief that if given an opportunity serve, County residents will use their professional skills and natural talents to support non-profits and add value. We also know for sure that Prince George’s County non-profits – 80% of which yield annual revenues of $25,000 or less – must focus on supply-side issues, like governance, in order to grow.
In January, we recognized forty exceptional County leaders under the age of 40, and we celebrated them in grand style! Now, they have committed to using their talents to strengthen the human development sector in Prince George’s County are interested in Board Service opportunities. Through a partnership with the Community Foundation for Prince George’s County, PGCSIF enlisted Forty UNDER 40 – Prince George’s 2012 to participate in Board Service training and to make themselves available to organizations interested in fresh talent, innovative ideas, and the potential that this new network brings to bare. These leaders are busy people who are successful in their own right, so of course there has to be a mutual assessment of need, interest, and fit.
Several organizations have proactively reached out to this cohort for support. We extend the opportunity more broadly and invite human development organizations to post their board and advisory service opportunities with PGCSIF.
